SONG Chang
Korea Tomorrow 2017
It’s not easy to deal with historical issues and propose alternative ideas in artworks. But if art can be used as the medium for reflecting our society through self-criticism of artists and self-examination of our history, it means the functions and values of art are still effective. Having been creating artworks regarding awareness of the problems related to the territorial division, I think the division is not simply a subject of artwork but a starting point of our perceptions and sentiment that permeate our culture extensively. Therefore, DMZ can also be found in our hearts other than the red line on the map of Korea. Unless we overcome the history of hatred and conflicts on this land, we can never remove DMZ from our hearts or open a new prospect. Healing means magnificent virtue that unites everyone who overcomes the division, in other words everyone who wishes for reunification.
