Korea Tomorrow 2016
SEO’s work uses a distinctive way of the collage technique: after sticking pieces of paper on a canvas, which she paints over and over with acryl paint. The way of using our Korean traditional paper, Hanji, expresses the oriental color sense and the softness of Hanji in good harmony. First, she paints a work with colors, and keeps completing the work, as she applies Hanji piece by piece and paints over and over to at least five-folded layers until her colors soak out. The repeated course of these piled layers of Hanji and painted colors gives her work a unique feeling of depth and vividness.
Her works, with the clear color sense of acryl painted on Hanji and the orient and the occident well-harmonized, have been called “the brush of neo-romanticism” since 2004. The insides of her works show Korean painting’s styles: her drawings use the ts’unfa of Hayupjunbeob. The bases of her works show the influence of Casper David Friedrich (1774-1840), the representative of German Romantic painting themed on natural landscapes, who she researched on while majoring in Korean painting. Above all, the influence of his teacher, Georg Baselitz cannot be overlooked, too. Prof. Baselitz emphasized “You don’t have to imitate what the European ones paint and must not forget where you are from.” She’s been constantly trying her best to paint her own unique paintings based on the tradition she learned from her teacher’s teachings, and to paint the unseen essence of matters.
