It is possible to experiment with painting itself by using the conventional painting elements (e.g. color, line, brushstroke, value, space, time, process) of 2-dimensional painting as subjects rather than methods to represent narratives or subjects. While we can further develop the contents of painting by expanding and reinterpreting the possibility of painting, we can also seek for new potential of 2-dimensional painting in terms of art form by installing painting in 3-dimensional space, not in-2 dimensional wall. Tracing lines to emphasize the brush stroke and color become the subject of painting, and layered multiple surfaces with transparent materials such as silk, chiffon, and shower curtain create visual and physical experiential space, which connects artwork, space, and audience organically. Thus, how to install the painting affects the interaction between audience and artwork, and space also gets subjectivity at the same time. Subjectivity and objectivity, accidental experience and artistic intention, 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional experiences meet each other in the same space. Regarding the rug work, neologism in internet culture and Korea traditional stamp design are combined to generate contemporary experience, which shows the artist’s perspectives on the personal and public characteristics of internet space. Social change and the spirit of the age caused by the internet which enables equal and wide distribution of information strengthen the individualism in the contemporary society. In relation to my installation space, shared experience with the audience can offer the fairly democratic subjectivity to them. Also, artistic tension is built by juxtaposing of artworks with different media such as painting and rug in the same place. Space itself and interaction between artwork and audience become another artwork which can be interpreted in different ways, and artwork, audience, and exhibition space get equal subjectivity. A young artist’s point of view and attitude on the analysis of ‘now’ and ‘here’ are unfolded in the space as various forms of experiments.
