JeeHee PARK

Korea Tomorrow 2016

Those living in a city often think they know about such places as convenient store, studio flat, and Korean style fried chicken restaurant very well as they use them very frequently. But we often get surprised about the fact that we don’t know anything about them sometimes.
In my work, I observe the space I live in and show the process of understanding how to operate it and the result of it. All the places in a city are associated with one another historically, politically, and socially and internalize a lot of information and dynamics. However, I intend to select and summarize some of that information with a selective attitude and interpret it with an intention of objectification. The ‘analysis result’ of this contradictory attitude comes out as measured values such as weight, temperature, and current or is sometimes expressed as an experimental tool to draw those. The result of sculpture having a form of pseudo-science experiment shows the artist’s subjective judgment, choice, and combination about particular space and also humans and materials comprising it. In the result, the order or patterns not exposed behind the space coexist in a very contradictory state, and it often exhibits some aspects that are absurd or violent.
Out of information about living space, I mainly focus on the landscape of organic matters, food and minerals, and buildings, and also their combination. After working on the area of academics in Sannam-dong, Cheongju or studio flat in Nonhyeon-dong, these days, I am carrying out a project about ‘Korean style fried chicken restaurants’.
