Alice in Wonderland

1.
There is an antiquated oriental art theory referred as “Single brush stroke theory” which stimulated myself who used to practice western painting. The theory is based on the importance of single brush stroke in the process of painting. As of my understanding of the theory, every necessary stroke should live and act in the artwork even after the work is finished. Outcome of the artwork is the result of single strokes and at the end, those strokes should be visible. When using the materials of western painting, it is common that the traces of initial phase are hidden at the last. But those traces undoubtedly exist on the bottom layers of pigments. However, this presence of existence is too weak and fragile. To present the traces, procedure of making should distinctly be visible. Constant exertions to make strokes clearly visible evolved into today’s painting method of mine. By controlling the density and thickness of paint, I could freely present or hide the phases of painting. It is almost like a transparent watercolor painting produced in the layers of materiality of acrylic paint.

2.
My present paintings are in pursuit of one creation through the conflict between the sensitive girl and my own mindscape which is solitary and fierce. Landscape paintings with girls initiated from a visit to my grandmother’s house in the countryside. Vast field and waterside near her house struck me with the odd feeling. Cold winter morning there, presented me a mystical scenery with arising wet-fog, and standing there evoked the sentiment of isolated existence. As a city dweller, I adored the atmosphere of that wilderness which made me stand still there every time I visited. One morning, I was strolling with my small cousins when the arising wet-fog was too deep to distinguish the surroundings. My cousins repeatedly appeared and disappeared in the vagueness and the residual images of surrounding objects made me encounter with indescribable perception. In the midst of fog, I was trying to keep them in my sight with concern. That scenery and my psychological state indicated me of something else and I, intuitively, reminisced about Alice in wonderland. That stroll in the wonderland was a dramatic experience for me and the atmosphere of that specific day was intactly transferred to my paintings.
I am, along with Alice, instilling my own breathes into the layers of air in wonderland.
