Using ground glass and steel gate collected from demolished area, urban high-rise apartments have been reproduced.
Through its opaque characteristic, ground glass played the role of protecting private space from outside’s view in residential area of poor environment. However, residents were also restricted in their right to a view and sunshine.
On the contrary, urban high-rise apartments guarantee safe and unrestricted right to a view and sunshine by applying as many windows as possible by using glass in many parts of building exterior for aesthetics and to ensure residents’ right to a view. As I saw windows with the same meaning functioning differently in the two residential spaces, I once again realized the fact that the components becoming the standards for good environment are drastically different depending on the economic power of residents, and thought about wanting to living in a good environment. In addition, I recollected my past living environment and surrounding memories, and felt the collision between my desire and recollection. Using ground glass collected, I’ve made the windows of high-rise apartments and made the building wall by cutting the steel gate to create sculptures that symbolize affluent residential complex, respective monuments, ruin of the future and the past beyond memory. In addition, I’ve expressed the psychological distance between audience and objects by installing black water on the floor and created a mirage like space of phantom by shining light to sculptures.
It expressed the complex sensibility of my and audiences’ inner entangled past and desire future, satisfaction of life and unfulfilled desire.
