KIM YongChul

Korea Tomorrow 2015

For bekgin, painting is one of the many facets through which he investigates his diverse interests but never allows it to collide or compromise in any way with the other modes of his artistic practice. On the contrary, he deliberately focuses on the visual, and more importantly, the tactile nature of the brushwork as a means to translating ideas in the way music or film cannot suffice. He always carefully expresses himself in words, explains his work as below: “My work is a vain attempt, and in this attempt, I try to observe and sometimes reject the marks of numerous civilizations and history. Also I am eager to capture the sophisticated emotion and rationality of human beings, the observing agents, with the emphasis on intuition and acquisition. In this, the emotion and rationality of human beings tends to be unsettled and splendid, for they are imperfect and indefinite. At the same time, this is rather more like self-discipline than nihilism. This kind of action is not for development, but for a simple transition.”
