KIM Joonkwon
Korea Tomorrow 2017
* Period of Poetic Landscapes: Among Kim’s works in this period depicting nature, his expressions of rivers and mountains stand out. In terms of technique, they appear to be drawn with a brush rather than printed from a woodcut, demonstrating the level of maturity in his printmaking. Characteristics of painting are shown in the works produced during this period, portraying subjects such as overlapping ridges, a forest full of trees, a few pine trees in an isolated field, and spring rain sprinkling on flowers. Furthermore, bright colors and soft edges create a path to a splendid world, enabling us to experience the poetic resonance that fills his style.
* Period of Landscapes with Mature and Impressive Expression: Subjects often used by Kim include bamboo forest, overlapping mountain ridges, pine forest, and vast fields. Works portray ordinary landscapes found throughout Korea. Scrutinizing his inner world, Kim provides a new meaning to borrowed images. He draws scenery from a distance into his domain and makes it a part of his nature. His expression technique as well as the selection of subjects and provision of meaning enable us to identify that Kim has reached a mature state in his career. The artist interprets nature like a pious monk and shows his creative intention without reservation, free from all obstacles. In doing so, his work embodies the spirit of poetry, rhythmical movements, and, most importantly, environmental friendliness. This is Kim’s brand of nature and art.
