CHO HyeongSeob
Korea Tomorrow 2014
As an artist, I focus on very ordinary objects and circumstantial conditions and situations produced by those objects. In other words, the subjects and materials in my work were collected from common places close to our everyday life, and I reflect the episodes that might have happened in those places on my artwork. The objects are familiar, but they approach to us in different guise and visage according to the relationship of surrounding objects or the relationship between object and another object. The objects acquired from a low level of relational web in the daily life contain our everyday experience, and their various features become a motif of the work. My artwork often changes into a different form through several processes, and a spatial breakaway can happen as the third result in a new space through the material dissimilation and alteration of the subject. Spielraum excluding one’s expected intervention: that is, I attempt to make an active, creative area and attract natural attitude and activity from the participants in it. By a dissolution and distortion of the conventional function which are familiar to us, I want to make the users, or the viewers, to feel distance from the familiarity. Also, I want to offer them an opportunity of rethinking about the role of the normal objects and devices that fulfill fixed functions so they can achieve an extension of thoughts and chances.
